Gabrielle Chanel

The official exhibition book, created to accompany the exhibition, Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto at the V&A South Kensington from 16 September 2023.

Edited by curators Oriole Cullen & Connie Karol Burks

As one of the most successful fashion houses in existence, Chanel owes much to the templates first laid down by its founder - Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel (1883-1971). Some of her most celebrated designs, such as the two-piece suit, the little black dress and the quilted handbag, remain in vogue to this day. Chanel designed first and foremost for herself: by creating clothes fit for an independent and active lifestyle, she anticipated the needs and wants of the modern woman.

This beautiful book showcases a stunning array of Chanel's most notable designs from her 60 years in fashion, largely drawn from the collections of the Chanel Patrimoine, Paris and the V&A. It examines the cut, construction, embellishment and provenance of the ensembles, as well as the design themes and motifs Chanel returned to throughout her career. Newly commissioned photographs of the selected pieces, together with archival images, capture the design evolution of this fashion icon.

The Artistry of Flowers: Floral Design by La Musa de las Flores

Seeing beauty in a flower could awaken humans, however briefly, to the beauty that is an essential part of their own innermost being, their true nature. The first recognition of beauty was one of the most significant events in the evolution of human consciousness.

Eckhart Tolle

The Artistry of Flowers encourages everyone to live with florals and to appreciate their beauty as we appreciate art. Celebrated floral designer Gabriela Salazar teaches us how to look at flowers and understand their characteristics from an artist’s perspective. By exploring different shapes, colors, and textures, she shows us how to understand flowers and their living, transitory nature.

Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk

Exhibition Catalogue

Edited by Anna Jackson

V&A Publishing

2020

The kimono is the ultimate symbol of Japan, revered within the country as the embodiment of national culture and regarded internationally as an exotic fascination. The iconic garment is often viewed as traditional, unchanging and timeless, but this book counters that conception, presenting the kimono as highly dynamic and fashionable dress. The cultural and sartorial significance of the kimono is explored in historical and contemporary contexts, both in Japan and the West, where its impact on clothing styles has been felt since the seventeenth century. Beautifully illustrated, the book features over 250 kimono and kimono-inspired garments from the V&A and collections around the world, revealing its sartorial influence on pop stars from David Bowie to Björk and examining the ways in which fashion designers such as Issey Miyake, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen have reworked its legacy.

Naty Abascal. The Eternal Muse Inspiring Fashion Designers

Edited by Rizzoli, 2020

The publication presents a handpicked selection of designs by Cristobal Balenciaga, Oscar de la Renta, Eliee Saab, Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino, among others. Abascal has been part of the history of these haute couture masters, not only as a model, but also as a muse, inspiration, and companion of their most significant successes, in daily life and in the pages of fashion magazines. This book marks the occasion of the exhibition Naty Abascal and Fashion! organized by Museo Jumex, Mexico City, from November 7, 2019 to January 5, 2020. Like the exhibition, it aims to evoke the big ateliers or couture studios, whose mirrors have witnessed the evolution of fashion, along with designers and models. Their reflections highlight the unique details of the cut and the proportion of the outfits that contribute to the transformation of the female silhouette, which testifies to contemporary times like any other art form.
